What size should I choose for my pool and is it better to install a stronger one than recommended?

There is no disadvantage to installing a stronger one than recommended, as the heat pump will run for a shorter time and the water will heat up faster. Regarding electricity consumption, it's status quo because although it runs for a shorter time, it consumes more when running, making it similar in the end. As a general rule, with 1.3 certified btu/liter for an in-ground pool and 1.5 certified btu/liter for an above-ground pool, you won't go wrong. It all comes down to the purchase budget!

How many degrees per hour?

This data is highly variable. It depends on the water temperature, ambient air temperature, humidity level, the unit's power, and the water volume. With adequate power in normal temperatures, the average is around 0.5 to 1 degree Fahrenheit per hour.

What is a reversible heat pump and is it necessary?

Heat pumps with a small evaporation surface (fins similar to a car radiator) tend to frost up quickly, which has led manufacturers of these models to integrate hot gas defrosting to compensate. Heat pumps with a large evaporation surface don't really have this problem, but the advantage is that the defrosting time will be shorter in cool weather.

Is a pool heat pump noisy?

A heat pump moves a lot of air, which obviously generates noise. The sound level is similar to a pool pump. Standards in this matter are quite strict and must respect the 55-decibel norm at less than 3 meters (10 feet). Be careful, as some manufacturers display decibels at 10 meters... more than 30 feet!!

Does the electricity consumption vary from one brand to another?

Contrary to what pool retailers might tell you, some brands and models consume much more than others. For example, a good 75-85,000 BTU heat pump should consume around 16-17A. However, some low-end models are close to 24A! which is 50% more!!

Does the heat pump need to be installed in the sun?

Accepted Answer

A heat pump uses the ambient air temperature to transfer it to the pool water. It's true that the air temperature is higher in the sun than in the shade, so on sunny days it will gain a little performance. However, in most cases, the heat pump will operate mainly at night or on colder, cloudy days. The choice of location therefore becomes secondary in these cases. There is no problem with it being in the shade, as long as there is good airflow around it.

What is included during installation?

Each installation is different, but as a general rule, all plumbing hardware is supplied and included. The base is at the client's choice. Electricity must be done by a master electrician who will install the required wire and circuit breaker.
